Coconut Grove Food Bank,

With the ongoing recession, some of the hardest hit families are right here in our own Grove community. In an effort to provide assistance to a sister parish, and local community, St. Stephen’s Episcopal Church provides much needed canned goods to Christ Church Episcopal every two months. Christ Church food pantry serves approximately 240 households in Coconut Grove.  A dedicated cadre of 15 volunteers packs and distributes 80 bags of groceries to families in the need in the Coconut Grove community.  A household is entitled to one bag of groceries every three weeks. A portion of the bags go to home-bound residents, and the elderly within the parish of Christ Church. Bags are also distributed to the senior citizen retirement center at the corner of Grand Avenue and Douglas Road, as well as the Thelma Gibson Health Initiative. The grocery bags contain cereal, rice, and canned meats such as, tuna, spam, corned beef, ham, chicken and turkey. These items are rich in protein provide a balanced meal and do not require refrigeration. Additionally, they supplement the many miscellaneous items that Christ Church receives and distributes.
The next canned goods food bank drive starts next Tuesday, August 17, 2010, and will conclude on Sunday, August 29, 2010. The collection point is the St. Stephen’s church office located behind the church. The church office is open Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday from 10 am to 4 pm.

The items most in need are canned meats, tuna, spam, turkey, chicken, and ham. However, all non-perishable goods are accepted. This is a wonderful opportunity for members to donate canned goods that will actually feed families in our own backyard.

Thank you for your interest in the Barnacle Historic State Park and the Barnacle Society.....

Thank you for your interest in The Barnacle Historic State Park and The Barnacle Society. We always welcome new volunteers and this lets you know some of our specific needs.

Special Events:
Many people first become aware of The Barnacle through one of our special events. The Barnacle Society hosts lawn parties, starlight movies, moonlight concerts, an Earth Day celebration, an Old Fashioned July 4th Picnic, and more. These events don't just happen; they are the result of many hours of work by park staff, The Barnacle Society board and membership, and other volunteers. We try to have sufficient levels of staffing so volunteers only work half the event, arriving early for setup or leaving late after cleanup, and are able to enjoy half of the event. Sometimes we even feed you!

Grounds keeping:
The grounds of The Barnacle Historic State Park require constant attention to fight the effects of the elements and inconsiderate visitors. Volunteers are needed to help with exotic plant removal, general gardening, tending the roses, trash pickup, pressure washing, leaf blowing, and other similar tasks. These positions offer the most flexibility in terms of scheduling.

Tour Guide:
For those interested in history, we are looking for docents to give tours of the house and grounds. These positions are needed primarily during the park's public hours, Friday through Monday 9 am to 5 pm, though we occasionally need help with school tours on Wednesdays and Thursdays as well as during some events. We will help you learn the story of Ralph Middleton Munroe and The Barnacle and will teach you to deliver an interesting and informative program.

Collections:
The Barnacle is a museum with a collection of thousands of historic artifacts. We need assistance with the care, cataloging, and cleaning of these artifacts. Training will be provided.

Maritime:
The Barnacle is home to two reproductions of Ralph Munroe designed boats, Proa and Egret. Like all wooden boats these need a lot of attention. Help is needed with many of the typical projects found around old boats -- cleaning, varnishing, hull scrubbing, etc. There is also a project underway to restore the marine railway.

Woodworking:
If you have a wood lathe and are skilled in its use, we have an immediate need for some unique wood turnings. There are other woodworking projects on which we can use your skills. Besides these defined roles, we are always interested in new ideas and unique skills. Don't be shy about sharing! If you are interested in any of these volunteer opportunities, please contact the Park Services Specialist, Steve Dimse, at steven.dimse@dep.state.fl.us or 305-442-6866.
