FAIRCHILD TROPICAL BOTANIC GARDEN TO PRESENT
U.S.’s LARGEST OUTDOOR EXHIBITION
OF CLAUDE AND François-Xavier Lalanne

On View At Fairchild November 30, 2010 through May 31, 2011
During Art Basel Miami Beach 2010

Works Never Before Publicly Exhibited In The U.S. To Be Shown
In Artists’ Largest U.S. Exhibition To Date

This winter, Fairchild Tropical Botanic Garden, will present the U.S.’s largest outdoor exhibition of works by French sculptors Claude and François-Xavier Lalanne as part of its renowned, annual visual art program. The exhibition, Les Lalanne at Fairchild, will feature more than twenty sculptures, including works never before publicly exhibited in the U.S., and one multi-piece work comprised of more than a dozen individual sculptures, to be installed throughout the Garden’s 83-acres of lush, tropical landscape designed by Central Park’s Frederick Law Olmsted group. The show will open on November 30, 2010, to coincide with Art Basel Miami Beach, and will remain on view through May 31, 2011.

The Fairchild Tropical Botanic Garden’s world-famous landscape will be the first in the U.S. to publicly host a series of premiere works by the renowned French artists.  Works never before publicly exhibited in the U.S. to be featured in the monumental exhibition include, Claude Lalanne’s (b.1924) Dimetrodon II (1998), a unique copper and steel topiary shaped in the form of a dinosaur from the Permian period, displaying a large Marlin-like fin and spouting water through shark-like teeth; and François-Xavier’s Canard sur L’Eau; Genie de Bellerive Grand Noir  (2007), a young owl with its wings spread in tribute to artist Max Ernst, and hovering upon a tall, abstract pedestal in homage to Constantin Brancusi, a close friend of the Lalannes; Grand Ours, a monumental bronze bear drawn into an upright stance; and Vache Paysage (2006), a bronze cow with its center doubling as a window through which to view the lush setting of Fairchild’s tropical gardens.

COCONUT GROVE CELEBRATES 2ND ANNUAL ‘GREAT GROVE BED RACE’
Wacky Race Beds and Non-Stop Family Fun Filled the Streets during the Labor Day Weekend

The 1.800.411 Pain Great Grove Bed Race was a huge success this past Sunday with over 35,000 people in attendance.  Grand Avenue and Commodore Plaza were replaced cars with beds and welcomed visitors, residents and fans of bed racing to the streets of Coconut Grove. Sunday’s events started with a packed Family Pajama Party on Virginia Street at 11 a.m. featuring music, storytelling and interactive obstacle course from Inferno’s Challenge. The attention turned down the block at 1 p.m. as 27 member Flanagan High School marching band led the Pit Row Parade of decorated beds.  Finally, the main event, a 2 p.m. green flag waived as Grand Marshal Tony Kanaan, Indy 500 professional racer, called out “ladies and gentleman, tie your shoelaces and prepare those beds” and with his “ready, set,  go” the 2010 races launched down the Homestead-Miami Speedway sponsored 1/8th-mile track of Grand Avenue, Coconut Grove.

On site with Mr. Kanaan were an esteemed panel of judges including City of Miami Mayor Thomas Regalado, County Commissioner Carlos Gimenez, City Commissioner Marc Sarnoff, Representative Carlos Lopez-Cantera, Homestead Miami Speedway President Matt Becherer, local Miamian and actor Steven Bauer, known for Que Pasa USA and Scarface, as well as a M.C. for the day, Miami comedian Johnny Trabs.  The celebrities and dignitaries alike chuckled, gawked and guffawed as they doled out the top décor, theme, creativity and engineering awards to Betty Bangs, Sexy Secrets, Metro PCS 4G super hero cartoon bed, and Fast Signs crazy cage of immigrants.  New to this year’s race was a “Text Your Vote for Crowd Favorite” won by Elvis impersonator Mosaic Church, who also was awarded by the judges as best overall.

“A total of $20,000 was raised this year for local charities and our top beneficiaries the University of Miami Sleep Program and Alonzo Mourning Charities,” says Event Producer for the Grove Merchant Group, Daisy Lewis.  “Not only did we meet our fundraising goal but we also managed to more than double our crowd attendance from 2009.  This is a huge milestone for an event that’s only in its second year” adds Lewis.

The 1-800-411-PAIN Great Grove Bed Race is produced by the Grove Merchant Group and proceeds benefits the University of Miami Sleep Program and Alonzo Mourning Foundation Charities. The Grove Merchant Group welcomes visitors and patrons to enjoy the tree-lined streets of Coconut Grove while branding the neighborhood as an attractive and viable village.  For additional information visit, www.thegreatgrovebedrace.com.
